Feel like a woman

Oh, Diane! I love it.

Check out all the clips from Martha's The Women who dress America. Awesome.

Putting the "Lounge" in Lounge Level

Purchased this summer at ZGallerie. Typically filled with an LED tea light (a favorite toy of L's) and creates a seriously relaxing mood for the lounge level.

Home. Sweet home.

Wedding Weekend

I'll probably be inserting wardrobe posts here and there while I decide on wedding attire for the November nuptials (did I ever mention it is Jeff's sister getting married? in Boston. Woooo!!!). I was planning on making a skirt, but last night I remembered I had a few fancy ones tucked away in my closet. Including this one:

(and old school BR)

I tried it on. It fits! And it's so pretty (better than the model even. I'm just sayin')

and just ordered these shoes (I'm soooo, so, so shoe deficient)

Aren't the pretty?
If I'm lucky the 2 1/2 inch heel will not kill me during the festivities. You better believe I'll be wearing them around the house for days to test. (check out the grey version. which will NOT go with my wedding outfit, but want anyway)

P.S. wedding colors are white, black, ivory, and grey. Mmmmmm. So very nice. (hence, the obsession with the grey version. Ok, since you asked I ordered both colors. Just in case. It's free shipping and returns).

M's birthday party

party, party, party

It's been so long since I used this camera that I completely spaced one of the issues with a twin lens. If you are interested in knowing why the tops of the cupcakes are chopped off (not exactly what I was going for) you can read about PARALLAX below:
{Parallax error can be seen when taking photos with many types of cameras, such as twin-lens reflex cameras. In such cameras, the eye sees the subject through different optics than the one through which the photo is taken. As the viewfinder is often found above the lens of the camera, photos with parallax error are often slightly lower than intended, the classic example being the image of person with his or her head cropped off.}

Total bummer. It was framed so nicely. I'll be recreating the cropping with Jeffy's birthday cupcakes. Do-over!

I think tutus are a must for every birthday party we have from now on.

Little miss did not even hesitate when presented with a cupcake. She devoured.

Thoughts on photography

The things that are close to you are the things that you can photograph the best. And unless you photograph what you love you're not going to make good art.

.....It never occured to me to leave home to make art.
--Sally Mann (from here)

It made me realize at some point my own life has become interesting enough {to me} to photograph. Not sure when that was. I also think photographing my life has made me a better photographer.

$5 Flowers: Week 9

Oh how I loved these (a type of sunflower). The selection has been lame for weeks and weeks. Until these. And last week they had some really cool (new) flowers....just in terrible shape. Wilty, wilty, wilty. I always give it a look so maybe next week they will be healthy and alive.

I like yellow ones the best on my kitchen table.

Pink & Orange (room) Party

I really wanted to complete these quilts to break up the orphanage look we had going on in their room (with the row of matching white cribs). I think it did the trick, but L's bed (right) has also been converted to a day bed since.

I am completely smitten with these lovelies. Especially when I walk in their room in the morning or at M's nap time and they are all snuggled up with them. Aw.

So happy.

The Good Report

1. Jeff said to me when trying to fold laundry, "How do you do this all day? Every time you pick something up, another one is dumping something out." And validated my entire existence.
2. And he folded laundry.
3. The Primary Pres. told me to go to Relief Society during the final hour. And I left a trail of dust on my way out.
4. Jeffy did a little research for me and found a ton of replacement cameras for cheap.
5. Small glimmers of hope with L and her manners.
6. Date night! It's been a while. Good food. Outside. Great convo.
7. Saw (and photographed) our friends. Haven't seen since this. (Now, that's just not right when they live a mere twenty minutes away). So we are planning on this in a few weeks. Oh yeah, there will be photos! L is going to loooove playing with their girls.
8. I'm so excited about my Halloween costume. I've always wanted to be a butterfly and I found Monarch wings for CHEAP. (I think my sister and I should dress all matchy, matchy this Halloween. Like we did back in the day).
9. Temporary bedtime solution: L sleeps on our bedroom floor halfway through the night (I try not to make it cozy, yet she keeps coming back). Translation: we are getting sleep. Try not to judge. Oh wait, you won't because you have probably less type A than me.

Live and learn peeps.

And P.S. I'm so making this for the lounge level.

Behind the scenes

I started photographing my sister's quilts for her. (An ongoing project). And shot a few images of our locations.

I might be obsessed with sunsets. I like the glow this one creates.

P.S. The verdict is in from the shop. Camera repairs are definitely waaaay more than the camera is worth. Looks like I'll be prowling KSL for a replacement. The good news = they are cheap! More good news = I've been using my med format for daily life. Ooo, it's so pretty to look through. (Compared to the Rebel which feels like I'm viewing the world through scotch tape).

Baby Steps

This week I'm telling myself

If you can successfully change one bad habit,
You're likely to change another.
Whole Living, October 2010, p 101

And P.S. Last night I dreamt that I was taking some gorgeous photos in a tropical location. There was an infinity pool and hammocks and green everywhere. Only to discover my camera never wound the new roll of film.

The Good Report

1. Jeff got the time off we needed for November wedding. Wooo! Huge stress relief.
2. Weekly play dates with neighbors are THE BEST.
3. Found a new family pic location that will not die or be chopped down in a week. Hoping to pull it off in the next few weeks.
4. M learned to climb the entire flight of stairs.
5. Allergy relief. Finally! Whatever was in the air is not in the air.
6. State Fair.
7. The ONLY good thing about L's sleep issues is M has become less of a light sleeper.
8. It was a good food week with new recipes (but I can't find any of the hits online).

This week I learned....
1. Those cheap old navy flip flops I wore all summer may have done permanent damage to my hips and knees.
2. I'm aging (see above).
3. What I'd rather be doing with all that time blog surfing.
* sewing more dresses for the girls
* sewing (completing) cute skirts for me
* sewing, sewing, sewing
* canning
4. Cold Turkey is not the answer. BALANCE is.
5. We are switching up our day. Eliminating things. Adding things.
6. We need more fun times together.
7. L needs me to be totally engaged.
8. Most of the blogs I spent time looking at I don't really even like that much (style, taste, philosophy, lifestyle, etc).
9. I'm sticking with a handful of daily photo blogs (which actually inspire me. minus the feeling like crap).
10. I'm getting a lot done.
11. Still have a lot to figure out.
12. Motherhood is kicking my butt.
13. Change is difficult.

Now. What to do about that 35mm?
I'll be taking it to the repair shop this week knowing the repairs are usually more than the camera itself. Boohoo. Wishing for good news.

September 15, 2010

Not so easy

Ok, I'm feeling like a crack addict. This is pathetic.

But I won't. Because my 35mm is on the fritz (don't take my crack). And I'm stressing out about it. Yesterday, I was unable to take some full on lovelies when I discovered my camera suddenly won't recognize new batteries or new roll of film. Dead. Frozen. On the fritz. And I'm about to break out into hives thinking of all the missed moments over the next several weeks. There is a lot coming up. And I want to photograph even if I don't blog about it.

(don't take my crack)

Is cold turkey really the best way to kick an addiction? I can't remember.

Yes, definitely an addict.

Bring on the hiatus

Blogging has totally inspired me. But mostly, it's driven me to insanity. Made me feel like crap in a million ways. You know, because my life is not like hers. I don't do that or I haven't been there. I'm not cool enough, smart enough, rich enough, clever enough, stylish enough. blah, blah, blah, blah. I don't make money off of every thought in my get the idea. It's all enough to make me want to punch everyone in the face.

But the reasons for a hiatus are actually quite deeper than that. I'm not doing great at the things that matter most to me. So I'm stepping back. Listening to my instincts (been feeling the hiatus pull for a while). And proving some things to myself.

I'll definitely be back (when???) as a more balanced, lovelier person.
And I hope you will read my blog again.

Peace out lovelies!

{P.S. but I will be posting the girls' quilts in their room sometime. because I already photographed it.}

The Good Report

This week I'm taking the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" approach to the good report.

September 11, 2010

Sometimes it hits me

I was laying on my brother's couch facing their stairs and noticed how perfectly framed it was. And the light! Oooh, the light! (courtesy of a skylight)

This set (took several pics.....all slight variations of the other) is up there with some of my favorite photos ever taken. These are the photos I tell myself, "You are no longer the president of suck-ville" (maybe just a resident). Ok, kidding. Kind of. I'm off to go read this and this again.

September 10, 2010

Pink & Orange Party

Photos of the quilts in their room later (on an unfinished roll of film). But until then I couldn't wait to share.....

M's quilt (more orange)
I've been liking her version more for some reason

a little technical info
Each quilt is made from twelve 4" strips with 1" white in between.
Finished quilt measures 41 x 56.5 inches

L's Quilt (more pink)

I won't deny that I motivate L to attach herself to this. You know, because I made it. I say things like, "Don't you want your pink quilt?", "Let's go get your pink quilt" or "Here's your pink quilt". She has a favorite blankie (it made an appearance here and here), but I'm hoping over time mine will take first place in her heart. Motherhood has made me really sentimental, ok.

I pretty much love how the quilting looks on the back. So clean. And subtle.

Detail view of the binding and back fabric on both quilts.

More quilting details

By far the easiest quilts I've made. I love this layout. And how the white in between looks like bias tape. Loooove.

I'll leave you with Miss cutie patootie.

Blueprint Quilt

Inspired by this dress

from May/June 2007 Blueprint Magazine
****so sorry about the quality...the page got really beat up during quilt process.
This is the original article it appeared in, but does not include the photo of this dress.

The Quilt

Finished size measures 71.5 x 50.5 inches

I kept track of my costs this time around for those who are curious

all solids purchased at my local Joann's using 40-50% off coupons
prints purchased at local quilt shop
1 yard Kona cotton solid in "Navy" $3.19
1 yard Country Classic cotton in "Kelly" $2.15
1 yard Quilter's Cotton in "Honeydew" $2.64
1 yard Country Classic cotton in "Artesian Blue" $2.15
3 yards Kona cotton solid in "White" $9.57
3 1/2 yards Lattice Urban Green by Fabri-Quilt (sale) $10.50
5/8 yard polka dot $6.00 (this one hurt after getting all the rest so cheaply, but it was so perfect)
1 2/3 yard Warm and natural Quilt batting $11.oo
TOTAL COST = $47.20

I didn't take as many photos of this quilt. Probably because I go from LOVING to HATING it about every other week. I'd do a lot of things different if I had a do-over. #1 though is a less literal translation.

But......It was just one of those things I had to get out of my system.

Cousin L and "baby"

teddy bear, named "baby"

There's a sweet story behind "baby" (not really mine to share), but doesn't it just LOOK like the kind of teddy bear that's got a story to tell? I love it.
Used, abused, totally loved.

September 06, 2010

Cousin L

I still cannot believe how well L and L played together. More of him to come.

September 05, 2010

The Good Report

1. A bedtime update: better than last week, but still having some middle of the night freak outs. What gives? This is new territory for our former excellent sleeper.
2. About that wedding I mentioned last week: what am I going to wear? Seriously.
3. It was in the 60's on Mon, Tues. Looooooove!
4. We got ourselves a library card and checked out some Clifford and Bearnstein Bears. I think we'll be doing this every week.
5. M's birthday outfit arrived (got for FREE using my rewards) and it's even cuter in person.
6. Getting our weekly meals organized. See meal planners below:
here great basic
here another basic
here Pretty without all the gross/cheesy food art. My personal fave.
7. Canned 16 pints of chicken.
speaking of canning....I'm looking to expand the flavors in my pantry. I need some good salsas. This book has me intrigued (salsa verde). And these labels HERE and HERE are cute for gifting your canned goods.
8. Tried these S'mores. Awesome. Especially because I never got around to purchasing a fire pit this summer. But 5-10 minute broil???? Not even. Try two minutes.
9. Loads of FREE tomatoes.
10. Play dates with other neighbor kids.
11. My VTs: completely awesome.
12. Got one last pool party with a neighbor before they moved.
13. A long weekend = extra day with the hubs.

Oh my goodness. Check out this little slideshow. I've died and gone to "little girls are so sweet and adorable" heaven. That song!

September 04, 2010

That hair!

I might be obsessed with her hair (or faux-hawks in general).

Alisha's got one.
So does my neighbor.

Plus, she's got those beautiful curls. Mmmm.....
