I am not

Wow, nothing could be ringing more true in my life these days. Really love this.

Corn fields (Nebraskee at heart)

I can honestly say there is nothing more beautiful to me.
(so sorry mountain lovers)

Sometimes I carry my 35mm around with me while running errands. I happened to have it this day. I'm so glad because the light caught my eye. I shot these two frames and I pretty much love it.

I could look at these for a very long time.

Just around the corner from our house. I noticed it on my way to the grocery store. I'd like to return when not in a rush.

Daily Life: Get your Kix

such a classic M face. Aw, I love it.

{**photographing in more atypical (for me) light. I WILL stretch myself. I will, I will.}

F to the AILURE

(F to the AILURE borrowed from Simple Lovely)

I was reading this the other day (a fantastic blog.) and thought of several of my failed photographs. I'll be sharing the one that came to my mind first (believe me...there are others).

There I was. Noticing a lovely bit of chiaroscuro. I never shoot in this kind of light (stepped out of my comfort zone). Pretty much everything you have ever seen from me is soft light (open shade....here's a good description). I learned a few things from this (oh what could have been) failure. Like shoulda, coulda, woulda shifted little dude to the right. Just one little step would move him into the highlight. (insert whailing). Then that adorable little face would have been visible (although side lighting is not necessarily my favorite) instead of underexposed. It also reminded me never to default to my camera's meter (grrrr). Big mistake people. BIG mistake. That meter doesn't know a thing about a thing.

F to the AILURE.

But lessons learned.

**now I'm off to pick up the latest batch of successes and failures at the lab.

Thoughts on Birthdays (and parties)

(i'm obsessed with tulle skirts for the girls lately)

My mind is on M's birthday party next month. I've decided on a pink & purple polka dot party. Oh, I've got some good stuff. Can't wait. She won't care or know the difference of course, but I've never gotten over that I didn't do anything for L's first birthday (or 2nd bday). My practical side (see above about one year olds not caring or knowing the difference) kicked in to full gear and we barely had a cake. I've always felt bad about it. Not losing sleep kind of bad, but just "should have" bad. My practical side and creative side battle. Always. I've also never gotten over my own lack of birthdays growing up (more of the barely had a cake business going on). It always bothered me. (My mom is not a celebratory one....fantastic in other areas, of course).

And so I'm changing that one. Big time. Let's all celebrate change, and birthdays, and overcoming our childhood......

So go get your polka dots on!

Get your SALSA on

I'm kind of hooked on this one. **Recipe via my sister, via a family friend

SALSA DEE-LISH
4 Large Roma tomatoes
1 onion
1 green pepper
2-4 jalepenos (depends on how hot you like it)
1 Tbs sugar
1 tsp salt
1 bunch of fresh cilantro
1/2 tsp oregano
2 Tbs vegetable oil
Juice of one lime
1 Tbs vinegar
1-2 8 oz cans of tomato sauce (depends on how runny you like it)
2 gloves of garlic

Combine all in food processor.

If I could, I'd pump this through my veins. Dee-lish!

On Equal Rights

{Someone else said it, but I've thought it}

"You were not created to be the same as men. Your natural attributes, affections, and personalities are entirely different from these of a man. They consist of faithfulness, benevolence, kindness, and charity. They also balance the more aggressive and competitive nature of man. The business world is competitive and sometimes ruthless. We do not doubt that women have both the brain power and the skills to compete with men. But by competing they must of necessity, become aggressive and competitive. Thus their godly attributes are diminished and they acquire a quality of sameness with man. The conventional wisdom of the day would have you be equal with men. We say, we would not have you descend to that level."

The Home

Great style comes from confidence.
Love what you love, and don't be shy about it.

(can't remember what magazine I pulled this from. it's a lot like this one though)

On Portraits

When I ask to photograph someone, it is because I love the way they look.....
What I’m saying is, I want to take you home with me and look at you for the rest of my life.

I pretty much love this statement.

The Good Report

2. Feeling highly motivated: projects.
3. Finished quilting L's crib quilt.
4. M has three more teeth coming through.
5. And is taking a second daily nap.
6. Her temperament is beyond lovely. (L is another story).
7. The hubs continues to amaze me with his response to our life stresses, my sudden tears,
and his willingness to fix anything that breaks. The latest: garage door.
8. Staying up late when everyone else has fallen asleep. (Quiet time with myself).
9. L was THRILLED when I told her she was going to a neighbor's birthday party. Broke out into dance and everything.
10. And I spent two uninterrupted hours quilting M's crib quilt during that party.
11. While M cruised around the house with her new stroller/walker. (totally unrelated, but isn't this the cutest?)
12. The best part about our Idaho trip last weekend: NO FLAT TIRE!

The favorite drive (kind of)

She has this one expression I've been trying to capture for a while now. Not happening. The big dog is slower than slow being manual focus and all, and not that great for kids. But I still try. (And dream of trading equipment suitable for constant movers).

Favorite drive in detail

Set out to photograph the corn fields for my photo ledge, but I hated the light and everywhere I was going with it once we were there. So I turned my camera to other things.

Oliver + S Fall 2010

I've died and gone to little girl dress pattern heaven
Release Date: September 7th

P.S. Photographed on our trip A LOT. It was completely awesome even though I might have annoyed everyone (family) around me. My parents are still in town and no time for anything. (Why am I so tired all the time?) Can't wait to get myself to the lab. Good stuff coming your way.

Inspired by our messy room

You know you have quilts on the brain when you start seeing quilt ideas in your messy room. I can't stop thinking about this color combo. I left this little pile sitting for days because it was so pretty. Then I decided I should just take a picture so I could get our room cleaned up. That salmon pink, khaki and seersucker (the world needs more seersucker) with bits of white. So many possibilities.

See ya's!

We are headed to Idaho for a few days. I little vacay might be nice for my visual boredom. I'm packing the photo gear in hopes of a little inspiration. The last 24 hours has been a little too much. Murphy's Law is in full effect at our house and I've about had it.

August 08, 2010

The Good Report

1. New church time is so much easier on our family.
2. Super nice weather all weekend.
3. Finally saw Eclipse. Loved it. Ooh, that Jacob.
4. Cruising in the sizzle with the radio blasting girls just wanna have fun...on the way to my favorite fabric store. Windows rolled down. I had a moment.
5. L has been saying and doing the sweetest things:
Mom, come sit with me.
I need to talk to you.
You need a hug?

6. L has also been sleeping all night I her undies. Waking up dry. Going to the bathroom by herself. Telling me when she has to go when we are out running errands. It's a whole new world and I LOVE IT
7. Moments that remind me to listen to myself and my instincts.
8. More reminders: tune out the noise (and refer to #7).
9. Jeff teaching the class even though it's not his turn.
10. Jeff letting me sleep in while he gets up with the girls and makes breakfast. There are no words.
11. I plan on sewing a lot this week. For the shop. For the girls. Gifts. Quilts.

Speaking of moments....I've had a few over the past few weeks that really make me want to add a disclaimer to the sidebar of my blog. I struggle a lot of the time with a lot of things. This blog is a small portion of our entire life package. And I use it as a space to remind myself of the good so Im not overwhelmed by all the rest. I reserve the whining and tears for those (mom, hubs, sister) closest to me. Aren't they lucky? hahahaha. Right now I'm really stressed and worried about a lot of things. Losing sleep and generally feeling like crap. Just want you to know my life is not perfect. Not even close. But there are some great things. My guess. . . . your life is probably the same.

Bed head: The mug shot

This is one of her best ever

A boy and his collection(s)

He's always got some sort of treasure he's carrying around. I think it is adorable. The feather we found in the garage. He also found the money in our garage (or maybe it was our car). And discovered the preying mantis in the grass while we were swimming. The ninja....I think it he got it that day.

I love L's expression in this one. She really likes her neighborhood friends. Loves to play with them. Yell to them from the window. Some times they get along. Some times they don't. But it's really sweet how SHE wanted to be in this picture.

Summer & sunglasses

I think this is pretty cute as a diptych. I need more walls so I can have more photo collections.

Being Content

"We women have a lot to learn about simplifying our lives.
We have to decide what is important and then move along at a pace that is comfortable for us.
We have to develop the maturity to stop trying to prove something.
We have to learn to be content with what we are."
- Marjorie Pay Hinckley

Simplicity

The Good Report

1. Dating the hubs.
2. Teenage babysitter makes me feel at ease leaving.
3. Dinner = Sushi
4. dining al fresco
5. Dinner conversation.
6. Gettin' our magazine fix at Borders. Love those glossy pages.
7. and a quilting marathon since my sister is gone for a week and I have her machine. mwuhahaaaaaa!
8. The girls were happy and content for a VERY long time while a listened on the phone to someone I love. (they are never happy when I'm on the phone)

We had some great summer eats this week

A surprise hit. This was so yummy. I used chicken broth instead of white wine and bought a spring salad mix because I couldn't find arugula. And substituted parmesan, asiago, romano mix for pecorino (which I also could not find). I recommend using just use ONE leek. Two was way too much.

Ok... I love pesto. And I love bacon. This recipe made me realize I don't like them together. The pesto overwhelms it all and I really, really, really want to taste bacon when eating a BLT. Plus, fresh mozzarella is divine (and expensive)! Not allowed to shine like it should either. I like my BLT's traditional. Real mayo and tons and tons of tomato. Ah well. Great concept with all those lovely ingredients, but bombs in real life. That said, I wasn't mad and my belly was full.
See other reviews here or just make it and decide for yourself.

We ate our BLT's with Antipasti Salad
This was another surprise hit. And I'm so loving summer eating. I usually despise fruity salad dressings, but the orange zest is subtle enough that I can say I'm a fan of this one. I used a spring salad mix for this too (couldn't find arugula). Skipped the parsley because I couldn't convince myself it would actually add any flavor. And would have loved the fennel for crunch (also couldn't find....I'm shopping at Walmart, you know). Also, I don't think you need quite that much kosher salt. 1/2 tsp would be plenty.
